Chai

Tell you more about where I come from
Call it home sweet home, look

Round the corner off of 63rd and Cass
Wasn’t much around, a couple stations for the gas
A couple fast food spots, Mickey D’s on the half days
Remember grabbing BK on the last day of 8th grade
14 with the Airwalk kicks
The whole block became my home when I was 6
Had a flock that was mixed with Arab, Indian, mostly Chinese
I was still the token black that everybody was pleased with
Always managed to tease me
“Ike is happier than gay
Sweeter than an oreo”
Not much else they would say
I’d be on Jameson Way down the street from the part
Playing Sandman and soccer, couldn’t stay long after dark
For the longest time, not much else that I knew of
Took me a while to grow up from where I grew up
I go back just for the few I love
Now it’s part of my story ‘fore I blew up
It’s home sweet home

Home sweet home
I’ll roam (roam on) my own
But I can’t get too far from where I’ve grown

Verse two take it back when I was living in my mama’s land
West coast, Imo state, it was in my mama’s plan
But I done block out some chapters of the plot
Suppress all the bad memories, say “I forgot”
Niggas calling me a brother then they stealing from the kid
Then they feed off my intelligence, it’s just the way they live
“Life is great” I was saying while I’m lying through my teeth
I would clean the gutters, read my book
And cry myself to sleep
But not a peep to my mama cuz my sister’s doing fine
Plus I’m here with all my family, a place that’s so divine
And I was lying to myself, thinking there’ll be better days
Til I caved and told my mama
“I don’t think I wanna stay”
That was 14 months, boarding school in my parents’ village
I was 14, turned 15 with a different image
Of this world and the places where I grew up
Opened my eyes to a new view of
Home sweet home

Home sweet home
I’ll roam (roam on) my own
But I can’t get too far from where I’ve grown

I’ve been searching for my freedom song in foreign land
It’s getting harder to understand
The sweetest melody that rings in my heart
I know that we can’t be too far

Drifting in this world
Diving deeper into the unknown
Tryna land upon a place I call my own
Ain’t hard being alone, when the phone don’t be ringing
And nowadays I don’t really be singing like the way I always did
But someday I’ll be singing to my kid
Tell him ‘bout all the things I did and let him know
“One day you gone grown to have your own
But you won’t ever be alone”
Cuz it’s home sweet home

Home sweet home
I’ll roam (roam on) my own
But I can’t get too far from where I’ve grown
