The whole block became my home when I was 6
Had a flock that was mixed with Arab, Indian, mostly Chinese
I was still the token black that everybody was pleased with
Always managed to tease me

Not much else they would say
I’d be on Jameson Way down the street from the part
Playing Sandman and soccer, couldn’t stay long after dark
For the longest time, not much else that I knew of
Took me a while to grow up from where I grew up
I go back just for the few I love
Now it’s part of my story ‘fore I blew up

West coast, Imo state, it was in my mama’s plan

I would clean the gutters, read my book

That was 14 months, boarding school in my parents’ village
I was 14, turned 15 with a different image
