Melody 03:52
'Kechi Chai Na na Long time coming Sweetest melody It's like Melody in my heart It's the start of part of something special Melody in my heart It's the start of part of something special Melodies harmonize Don't try to criticize my vocals That was realized through classical and local 'Kovsky and Kuti, Bilal and Beethoven Just like Lupe, rap wasn't my first chosen Then I became open to the rhyme, play the rhythm in my heart Bells chime, telling my own izm like Badu Call it 'Kechi-izm, but the shit ain't catchy Spit my flow, can't nobody else match me Actually it ain't just about the flow Put the Durag on it From the velvet to the silk, anyway I don it This songs about what's embedded deep within But if I go deep within her in bed then that's a sin I knew a Sim, I hadn't seen her since Got so cynical Life's no Cinderella or Sims Or wonderland like Little Simz Anointed by Simba But seems it ain't simple no more I feel I'm tryna make a deal staring at three doors Can't tell what's in store My hands getting sore Conga for hours, I'm soaring, I'm so empowered Swallowing the beat cuz music is my remedy As I sing over this melody Melody in my heart It's the start of part of something special Melody in my heart It's the start of part of something special Melodic dictation, ain't that a situation Listening to inner tunes while y'all having conversation But it ain't oral, it's aural - skills for the drums Y'all still talking shit, block my ears with both thumbs Ask yourself Do you listen for content? For the lyrical views or the musical elements? Cuz I've spent days on the same line, the same beat I even skip lunch time Food for thought, my treat Let it thaw out in my mental Pause, reflect, repeat Eating up the instrumental, let it thaw out in my mental Pause See the effect I caused My mind's sharp like the teeth on jaws Or the sharp on D, it fits the harmony I fit the armor that God sent me When the walls fall down, the final trumpet sounds And I'll be found bound for the heavenly As I sing over this melody Melody in my heart It's the start of part of something special Melody in my heart It's the start of part of something special Melody in my heart It's the start of part of something special Melody in my heart It's the start of part of something special Melody in my heart It's the start of part of something special Melody in my heart It's the start of part of something special

about

This song was created on a Sunday afternoon in August 2017. I had been drawing influence musically from a Nigerian children’s gospel song I grew up listening to when my grandma was staying with us. Still early in my writing stage (just under a year of writing music), this song came rather seamlessly. (I did make a few edits, of course, as recently as last year.)

This is one of those songs that truly has no deeper, esoteric kind of meaning. It’s the purest representation of being in tune with myself through the music. It’s a song about what music does for me on an emotional, intellectual & spiritual level and sharing that with the people.

I’d performed it live for four years —at every open mic, basement gig, and local venue I could get a chance at — before ever making the studio recording. I knew I was sitting on something special, so I took my time with it. But now is that time. And I want everyone to sing along with me.
